This will be a cultural center built on more than 100 acres in the area around Governors Lake Business Park between Peachtree Industrial Blvd and Buford highway. It will be an upscale Asian culture and tour center with a garden, museum, hotel, and a variety of schools, apartments, shops and restaurants. Different Asian countries will each build villages to showcase their own culture. Planned villages will include Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Pakistani and more. It is expected to be a major tourist attraction and generate thousands of jobs.
Phase I elements of the Georgia-Suzhou Friendship Chinese Garden will include about 14 buildings such as pavilions and a Tea Garden. The Chinese designs will incorporate water, stone, art, and plants covering 2 acres of the 100 acre Asian Village. The plan to begin building the Chinese Garden was originally scheduled to begin around Thanksgiving 2006, but according to an January 2007 article in the Gwinnett Business Journal (http://www.gwinnettbizjournal.com/content.cfm?Action=story_detail&StoryID=1800&CFID=181131&CFTOKEN=19812545) "the groundbreaking had to be pushed back because legal paperwork is still being finalized with Gwinnett County."
On May 23, 2007 county commisioners tabled a vote on rezoning required for offices and townhouses. "The concept is intriguing, but it's always been a moving target," said Bert Nasuti, commisioner for the Peachtree Corners community. "It's been tabled and tabled and tabled, and the reason is we wanted them to come back with something more concrete."
Asian garden construction has been rescheduled, again, to begin Fall 2007. (updated 5/07)
