Pleasant Hill Tunnels

From Peachtree Corners

Update: Tunnels are complete.

From the City of Duluth website (http://www.duluthga.net/dt/planning/project-info/governme.html):

"The solution calls for a tunnel under the railroad and Buford Highway with a partial cloverleaf interchange at Buford Highway. The proposed improvements will reduce delays/congestion to the motoring public, improve safety both at the railroad crossing and the existing intersection, and will accommodate future traffic volumes."

According to a Dec 29, 2005 AJC article Pleasant Hill tunnels win funding GDOT allots $34.6 million to construct two passageways

"If you cannot fly over the traffic at Pleasant Hill Road and Buford Highway, do the next best thing: Tunnel under it. . The state Department of Transportation on Wednesday awarded a $34.6 million contract to build two tunnels on Pleasant Hill Road to ease the commuting crunch where the road intersects with Buford Highway and a nearby railway.. One tunnel will divert traffic under Buford Highway, where long lines of idling cars and trucks are commonplace. The second will take cars under . . ."

The project was started in April of 2006 and should take about 2 years to complete, at the cost of $25.3 Million.
